Directions

This trail takes you along the pleasant and quiet country roads of the Mealagh Valley, through forested areas and a fairly steady climb to the top of Mullaghmesha Mountain which will provide breathtaking views over the coastal bays to the west and as far as the Kerry mountains in the north, on a clear day. Follow the Purple Arrows.

Set out (left) from the Mealagh Community Centre along the road for a short distance. Head left off the road when indicated and follow the trail to the point you meet the road again. From here you can take the loop in either direction. Head along the road to your left or take the trail straight ahead off road.

Sections of this loop walk are also part of St. Finbarr’s Way – a walk from Drimoleague to Gougane Barra, You will see the brown way markers that direct you towards Drimoleague to the south and Kealkil to the north.

Walks over Mullaghmesha Mountain (600m) should not be undertaken in
cloudy or misty conditions. Walkers need to be aware that conditions can change rapidly so good map reading skills and hill walking experience are essential in this landscape.

News & Updates

The Sheep’s Head Way is closed to the public on Sunday 31st January 2021

As usual each year, the Sheep’s Head Way is closed on 31 January, unless the expressed wishes of the Landowner states otherwise. This has become a customary practice which enables the landowner to grant permission for the public to access their land throughout the remaining year without risk of any public right of way being established. We hope you will respect this necessary inconvenience.

Mount Corrin loop

Due to storm damage, the forestry section of the Mount Corrin loop walk will remain closed until further notice.
