Directions

Mealagh Woods is great trail for family walks. The route takes you through deciduous woodlands and along the bank of the Mealagh River, taking in an ancient wedge tomb. Foot bridges cross the river at two points to make a pleasant meandering loop walk. Follow the Orange Arrows.

On the south side, the entrance is shown near the road at Barnagowlanes, you can drive down the track to a car park at the bottom . There is also a car park on the north side of the valley at the Coomleigh entrance into the woods.

There is an access path off the main loop which brings you by the Barnagowlanes Wedge Tomb. This route can be slightly boggy.

During heavy rain, and for a short while after, the area around the river can flood. If the ground is flooded please do not attempt to complete the route. Please return the way you came.

This is one of very few trails where well behaved dogs are welcome, but please keep them on a lead near the river so as not to disturb otters. If they soil the path, please kick their droppings to one side where they will not be a nuisance and will degrade quickly. Please only use “poop bags” if you take them away with you!

News & Updates

The Sheep’s Head Way is closed to the public on Sunday 31st January 2021

As usual each year, the Sheep’s Head Way is closed on 31 January, unless the expressed wishes of the Landowner states otherwise. This has become a customary practice which enables the landowner to grant permission for the public to access their land throughout the remaining year without risk of any public right of way being established. We hope you will respect this necessary inconvenience.

Mount Corrin loop

Due to storm damage, the forestry section of the Mount Corrin loop walk will remain closed until further notice.
