Directions
You can also start this Loop walk from the Tooreen Trailhead
To start from the Black Gate: Walk west, after 300m follow the SHW signage and turn right, and then left. After another 600m you will then be on the Poet’s Way Loop, follow the RED Arrows along the ridge, past the ruins of an old signal tower and a WW2 look out post, until you descend to the Car park at Tooreen. Continue straight on and out towards the lighthouse west, past lovely Lough Akeen, down to the helicopter pad where you have the option to walk down the steps to the lighthouse (worth the views). From the helicopter pad the trail heads back on the northern side of the peninsula in an Easterly direction for 4 to 5 km out onto a quiet country road. At Reagh, follow signs for the poet’s way and Cahergal, cross a stile to travel across the peninsula to the south, where you will reach a junction where you joined this loop. From here turn left to return to the Black gate.
